Civic Pride

Founded in 1995, Glendale’s Civic Pride Ambassadors are a volunteer group with a deep sense of commitment to enhancing the economic, social and cultural vitality of Glendale. Glendale University

Glendale University is a free educational program open to Glendale residents, age 16 and older, who want to learn more about the operations of municipal government. Want to get involved in municipal government, join a board or commission or run for public office one day? Glendale University should be your first step. Each class highlights key functions of the city, such as finance, library, police and fire services, leaving students with an understanding of the daily operations of their city government.

In order to graduate from the course, students must attend at least eight of the 10 classes. Each spring and fall, Glendale University classes are held in the evenings from 6 to 9 p.m.

Kids at Hope

Glendale was the first city to adopt the national Kids at Hope youth initiative, a comprehensive, city-wide program that mobilizes teachers, police offices, coaches, parents and the entire community to identify, celebrate and strengthen each child's unique gifts. By partnering with area universities, elementary schools, non-profit organizations, businesses, churches and after-school programs, Kids at Hope strives to reach every child in the city, empowering each one to succeed.

Through more than a decade of research, Kids at Hope has emerged as a well-defined and effective youth development initiative designed to bring out the talents and potential in all school-aged children. Kids at Hope is a belief system that is reinforced and enhanced by programs. These programs include training sessions and material for teachers and others who interact frequently with youth and a report card for teachers to use that focuses on attitude, kindness, values and efforts.

To receive the Kids at Hope city designation, Glendale had to meet the following criteria:

  • passing a formal resolution acknowledging the city's commitment to Kids at Hope
  • agreeing to offer training or orientation sessions on Kids at Hope to Glendale police officers, recreation workers and other city employees
  • getting a public school system in Glendale to participate in the initiative
