Donate Citrus To Help Feed Families In Need Ahead Of MLK Day

The city of Glendale is making it easy to help fight hunger in the spirit of the late civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., who was committed to creating change in his community.

What: MLK Jr., Day of Service, where the public is urged to donate citrus from their own trees and drop it off at the citrus collection areas. Donated citrus will be given to St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance and used in their food boxes. Volunteers will be available to unload citrus from residents’ vehicles.

When: 9 a.m. to noon on Jan. 17

Where: Sahuaro Ranch Park (9802 N. 59th Ave.) and Manistee Ranch Park (5127 W. Northern Ave.)

Why: Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which is on Jan 19, is a federal holiday designated as a day of service, where Americans are encouraged to volunteer and enhance their community. Volunteers in Glendale, as well as the city and its partners, will do their part to meet Dr. King’s vision of ending hunger and poverty by hosting an event to allow the community and volunteers to gather their resources to make a large impact. Martin Luther King Jr., Day of Service helps to ensure residents who are struggling with food insecurity have nutritious food while bringing together volunteers to enjoy outdoor community service.

Who: Community Services Department, HandsOn Greater Phoenix, St. Mary’s Food Bank and volunteers in the community
