School is in full swing again, and parents are likely looking for fun places for their children to play sports and other games while connecting with their peers after classes. Luckily the city of Glendale’s FREE REC on Wheels program will resume for the season this month at various parks.

REC on Wheels will kick off for the fall from 3 to 5 p.m. on Oct. 14 at Sunset Park, which is at 45th Avenue and Mountain View Road. With this outdoor recreation program, Glendale’s Parks and Recreation Department staff brings LEGO tables, flag football gear, baseball bases, basketballs, soccer nets, as well as cornhole and chess sets, along with other playful equipment.

The main goal of REC on Wheels is to inspire children to play to enhance their health and wellness through physical activities that also engage their minds.

Children may walk to the parks after school, or their parents may drop them off and/or pick them up at the REC on Wheels site. It is a drop-off program, where participants may play and leave whenever they choose, but parents should stay at the site with their children if their little ones are ages 5 and younger.

“We’re happy to provide these wonderful recreational activities that children can enjoy in our beautiful parks around the city,” said Dean Kinnoin, Recreation Supervisor for the city of Glendale’s Parks and Recreation Department. “REC on Wheels is a great way for kids to get some exercise while socializing and using their imagination in comfortable settings conveniently located near elementary schools.”

In addition to the Oct. 14 visit to Sunset Park, REC on Wheels will also visit the following parks this month:

  • Oct. 15: Desert Mirage Park, 87th and Maryland avenues, noon to 2 p.m.
  • Oct. 16: Chapparal Park, 57th Avenue and Greenbriar Drive, 3 to 5 p.m.
