Glendale Police Department Public Safety Cadets

GPD Cadets

Who we are:

The mission of the Glendale Police Department (GPD) Cadets is to prepare our young adults for careers in law enforcement as sworn or non-sworn officers. Young adults from the age of 14.5 to 21 years of age participate in weekly meetings, community outreach programs, competitions, explorer/cadet academies, physical fitness programs, life skills training and various team building activities. All activities are accomplished under the direction of Glendale Police Officers who serve as Unit Advisors.

Qualifications

To become a Glendale Police Cadet, please send an email to GPDCadets@glendaleaz.com. Author a short essay on why you want to become a GPD Cadet, what you can do to help your community and what you expect to learn from the program. Based on the strength of the essay, you will be placed on the wait list. Every few months we take on new cadets which is based on attrition. Some of the minimum qualifications are:

  • Be between 14.5 and 20 years of age (can remain until 21 years of age)
  • Have excellent moral character
  • No recent or excessive drug usage
  • No recent or excessive criminal activity or serious driving infractions
  • No gang affiliation
  • Maintain a “C” average or higher while in school
  • Must submit to a background check
  • Hold yourself to the highest standard while at and away from the cadet unit

It is rare that we do not allow a new cadet to continue with the program, but it does happen. It is up to you to be honest about your application and be truthful in the application process.

Participation

GPD Cadets attend weekly meetings located at our training center at 11550 West Glendale Avenue from 5:30PM to 8:00PM. Meetings are held on Mondays except for holidays. Initially, new cadets will be classified as “recruits”. With hard work and determination, recruits will be promoted to “Cadet”. Cadets will be given an overview of police procedures to prepare them for future employment. Some of the things explorers get to participate in are:

  • Report Writing
  • Patrol Ride Along
  • First Aid
  • Team Building
  • Traffic Stops
  • Cadet/Explorer Competitions
  • Physical Fitness Training (PT)
  • Cadet/Explorer Academies
  • Teen Police Academy
  • Willing to Donate 16 Hours Per Month

Success Stories

Several of our Glendale Police Cadets have gained employment with our police department and several other police departments as sworn and non-sworn employees. Several past cadets decided not to pursue careers in law enforcement but found the training they received beneficial to them in various other fields.
